Switzerland has created a host Government Secretariat for the World Summit on the Information Society, the Swiss Executive Secretariat (WSIS-SES). The SES is comprised of professional staff members who worked to prepare the Geneva Summit in December 2003. The SES also retained the services of a professional conference management company to handle the logistical requirements in Geneva.
Ambassador Daniel Stauffacher, the Swiss Federal Council’s delegate to WSIS Geneva 2003, heads the Swiss Executive Secretariat.

Responsibilities
•  Diplomatic relations and intergovernmental preparations in Geneva
•  Logistical planning and preparation for the Summit Geneva 2003
•  Focal point office of the host country on behalf of Federal Office of Communication (OFCOM), Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAE) and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)
•  Support and assist the WSIS Executive Secretariat (WSIS-ES)
•  Coordination of side events in cooperation with the WSIS-ES
•  Media coordination
•  Contacts and relations with participants, partners and stakeholders of the Summit. Including Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations in Geneva and New York, Canton and City of Geneva, UN , ITU, HLSOC, Governments, IGOs, NGOs, civil society and private sector

Activities
Ambassador Stauffacher and Ambassador Ben Salem of Tunisia have organized numerous informal consultations with other government representatives in Geneva, at the request of ITU Secretary-General Yoshio Utsumi. The Secretariat has already organized two informal meetings in Geneva, the Coppet Workshop (December 2001) and the Information Day (April 2002), bringing experts and business representatives in the new technologies sector together with government representatives in Geneva, in preparation for the first Preparatory Committee Meeting (July 2002) for the December 2003 Summit. Ambassador Stauffacher is Chairman of Sub-Committee 1 (Rules of procedure) and Vice-President of the Prepcom Office.
